Women living in North America have the highest rate of breast cancer in the world. At this time there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. In 2007, about 40,460 women will die from breast cancer in the United States.

*Chad's Story*
In 1991, at the age of three, Chad was diagnosed with leukemia. In 1995, at
the age of seven, he relapsed. He needed a bone marrow transplant.
Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of friends, family, and his medical
team, no match was found. As a result, doctors decided to try an
experimental protocol. For the next 17 months Chad lived as an inpatient in
the cancer ward of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. There, he fought the
good fight, which included having to learn how to walk and talk again
because of the devastating side effects of the drugs that were intended to
cure him. Tubes were attached to him so he could breathe and eat. Through
the ordeal, he experienced cardiac arrest and coma, and underwent numerous
surgeries and multiple blood transfusions. He was pronounced dead twice.

While he was bravely fighting the battle, his father would use magic to
distract Chad from the fear and pain he was enduring. While receiving his
treatments, Chad would lie in his hospital bed and practice making magic for
hours a day. Each week his dad would teach him new tricks to master. In
1998, at long last, Chad was released from the hospital. That same year,
Chad's dad collapsed and was subsequently diagnosed with a malignant brain
tumor. A respected dentist and local tennis champion, Chad's dad Don
deteriorated quickly. In a matter of a few months, he became a three month
old trapped in a 41-year-old body. Don died on January 17, 2000, leaving
behind Penny, his wife, and his children, Faith and Chad.

The following two years Chad dedicating himself to perfecting his magic act:
the legacy his dad had left him. Chad has performed around the country
including: A special invitation by The President of the United States,
George W. Bush and our First Lady, Mrs. Laura Bush, at the Easter Egg Roll
on the White House lawn; The Magic Castle in Hollywood, California; the
Philadelphia 76ers; MagicLive in Las Vegas, Epcot/Disney World; Richard
Petty of NASCAR; Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camps; Ronald McDonald
Camps; and for Senator Mike Eman of the country of Aruba. Other performances
include: Internship for Jeff McBride, Trump Marina Casino in Atlantic City,
Invesco Field at Mile High, Denver, Colorado; CN 8 - Comcast TV; The
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; American Cancer Society and Children's
Miracle Network. He has appeared on Criss Angel's Mind Freak Show for the
A&E network and was cast as the young David Copperfield in a primetime TV
show. Chad is the recipient of the American Cancer Society's Courage and
Inspiration Award, was awarded the Philadelphia 76ers Hometown Hero Award
and a college scholarship from the Philadelphia Eagles. He made his own DVD
teaching simple magic. Chad was the finalist in the Volvo for Life Award and
was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award for the Leukemia Society. Chad
is the founder of the Spread the Magic Foundation, a nonprofit corporation
that performs magic for pediatric cancer patients
(www.spreadthemagic.org).< http://www.spreadthemagic.org/>

To this day Chad continues to add the abracadabra to all our lives, as his
dad did for his, in the hopes that everyone can find the magic in their
lives as he did.

October 25th Angels, babies, and alcohol, oh my!

SHABBAT SHALOM HAGESHER!!!

Candle lighting: 5:49pm
Havdalah:
6:47pm

This week we read parashat Va-yera:

This week we read of the birth and death of Isaac….just kidding! Okay, half kidding.  The parasha starts out with three angels coming to Abraham and telling him that Sarah will soon give birth to a son.  Sarah overhears this and thinks it's pretty hilarious since she is quite old and stopped menstruating years ago, so she laughs.

Then the story moves on to God telling Abraham God's plan to destroy the city of Sodom .  Abraham fights to save Sodom , since his job is to teach justice throughout the world, but in the end God wins and only Lot , his wife, and two of their children are saved from Sodom .  Lot 's wife dies, and Lot and his two daughters escape to the mountains, where Lot 's daughters decide that they are going to single-handedly save the human race.  Then, they got Lot nice and drunk, both had sex with him, and each got pregnant.

Sarah gave birth to a son Isaac, as predicted.  Sarah is jealous of Hagar her handmaiden's son Ishmael, and orders Abraham to expel them so that Isaac does not have to share his inheritance.  The parasha concludes with the famous story of the binding of Isaac.  To make a long story short, God tests Abraham's faith by telling him to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, but when the time for the sacrifice actually comes and Abraham is 100% ready to sacrifice his son, God stops him and has him sacrifice a ram instead.  Because of this brave deed, God blesses Abraham.

As you can see, we read some pretty crazy stuff this week.  One thing sticks out, however, as something that applies to us today.  In chapter 18, verse 19 we read "For I [God] have singled him [Abraham] out, that he may instruct his children and his posterity to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is just and right, in order that the Lord may bring about for Abraham what He has promised him".

What are two things God promised Abraham?  Canaan and a long line of Jewish descendents.  Those are two things that we definitely want and need today, Israel, and more Jews!  From verse 19 we can see that in order for Abraham to receive what God has promised him, he has to teach his descendents for all of posterity the way of the Lord, and that includes us.  Take some times this week to think about some things that you do that are "in the way of the Lord", and we can continue to hope for peace in Israel and more and more generations of Jews.

Questions:

1. What are the names of the grandchildren of Lot ?  (3 points)

2. What How old was Abraham when Isaac was born?  (3 points)

3.  If you were single-handedly responsible for the continuation of the human race, what would you do?  (5 points)

**Please send all answers to Sarahjaye1@aol.com.  There will be a prize for the person with the most points at the end of the year, so keep sending those answers!!!**

I wish you all a wonderful, relaxing Shabbat!!
